Surgical facelift in Seoul: techniques, recovery and planning a trip

Mini vs full facelift

Mini or full facelift: what needs to move?

A mini facelift generally uses more limited access, while a fuller operation allows broader treatment of facial and neck laxity. A systematic review of MACS lifting found that its effect on neck rejuvenation was limited; additional neck procedures may be needed.[1]

What does “mini facelift” mean?

The useful meaning is a limited surgical plan, often with a shorter incision around the ear. The phrase alone leaves important questions unanswered: how far the skin is lifted, whether the SMAS is folded or suspended, and whether the neck is treated. Ask the surgeon to describe those details in ordinary language before deciding what the label means for you.[2]

MACS stands for minimal access cranial suspension. It is a short-scar approach that combines limited skin undermining with purse-string sutures to suspend the deeper tissue in an upward direction. It is an operation involving incisions and internal tissue work.[1]

What does a full facelift add?

A broader facelift plan can extend access around the ear and into the posterior hairline to redrape more skin. A separate under-chin incision can provide access for neck work. ASPS facelift procedure guide, checked 4 November 2026 The deeper work may use SMAS plication, a SMAS flap or a deep-plane approach.[2] These are components to confirm individually, rather than assume from the word “full”.

The neck can contribute to the appearance of the jawline through loose skin, fat and the platysma, a thin sheet of muscle. A fuller face-and-neck operation may address several of those tissues. The assessment should show which contribution matters in your case and whether treating the lower face alone meets your goal.[2]

How strong is the evidence for MACS lifting?

A systematic review included 6 studies covering 739 people treated with a MACS lift. Satisfaction was reported as relatively high, but the authors judged the evidence level low in 3 of the studies and found limited neck rejuvenation. Those findings support a discussion about treatment reach rather than a promise that a short-scar procedure can meet every face-and-neck goal.[1]

Ask whether the expected change depends on an added procedure. If the suggested plan combines a mini lift with separate neck treatment, compare that whole operation with the alternative. The incision, anaesthesia, aftercare and quote should all describe the same combined scope.

Does mini mean a quicker recovery?

The amount of surgery matters, but the name alone cannot set a return-to-work or travel date. The Aesthetic Society relates longer recovery to more extensive treatment and stresses individual variation. Compare the actual dissection, neck work and any additional surgery before comparing downtime. The Aesthetic Society aftercare guidance, checked 4 November 2026

Ask for separate milestones for dressing review, suture removal, everyday activity and departure. A patient who feels ready for a quiet outing may still need incision care or another examination. Put those appointments in the travel plan before choosing accommodation or a return flight.

If time away from work is limited, describe the work itself. Desk work at home, public-facing work and a physically demanding job create different practical demands. Ask what activities the proposed plan allows at each review, and leave room to change the schedule if healing takes longer.

Which findings help decide the scope?

  • Point out whether your concern is beside the chin, underneath it or both.
  • Show the surgeon your usual hairline and hairstyle when discussing the incision.
  • Describe previous facial or neck surgery and the location of old scars.
  • Ask which visible concern may remain after the proposed limited operation.

Facial assessment includes the quality of the tissues, the direction in which they need to move and the distribution of facial volume. A systematic review comparing modern facelift techniques linked their advantages and limitations to these anatomical factors.[3]

Ask the surgeon to explain the alternative as well as the recommendation. For a limited lift, the useful alternative may be a broader operation or postponing surgery. For a broader plan, ask which part would be lost if the operation were made smaller. That makes the decision specific to your priorities.

A discussion with AVANT Plastic Surgery’s surgical consultation team can begin with the areas you want treated and the recovery arrangements you can make.

What should the written plan say?

Request the incision route, the deeper-tissue technique, the intended treatment areas and the neck work, if any. Have optional procedures listed separately. Ask for the planned anaesthetic, follow-up location and the person responsible for changing the plan after the examination.

Keep your personal goals alongside that plan. If the main concern is loose skin below the jaw, a description focused only on cheek lifting needs further explanation. If the neck is not a concern, ask why an additional neck procedure has been proposed. A clear recommendation connects each operative step to a finding.

Questions about mini and full facelifts

Is a mini facelift a skin-only facelift?

Not necessarily. A MACS lift, for instance, uses suspension sutures as well as skin treatment. Ask what happens to the SMAS.[1]

Can a mini facelift treat my neck?

The MACS systematic review found limited neck rejuvenation. The surgeon needs to assess whether a separate neck procedure is required for your goals.[1]

Does a full facelift always mean deep plane?

No. Broader operations can use different SMAS techniques. The extent of access and the plane of dissection are separate choices.[2]

Is there an age cut-off for a mini facelift?

The technique decision is based on the anatomy and quality of the tissues, alongside health and goals, rather than an age label alone.[3]
